Born in the U.S., Janet Johnson grew up amid the rolling hills and lush farmland of central Pennsylvania. There she developed a fascination with the elemental beauty of the landscape.

At Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, Janet studied painting, printmaking and ceramics. Through the school’s foreign study program, she went to Rome , where she studied the masterworks of Italian painting and sculpture. Janet returned to Italy to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts at Rosary College in Florence.

Several important themes resonate in Janet’s art. She presents an idealised representation of nature, in the tradition of Romantic art. Her work evokes the poetry of the landscape: the glitter of snow and ice; the sweeping curve of a mountain summit; the layered tints of sunlight; the shimmering night sky.

The artist has a lifelong passion for mountain sports, and her work depicts themes that are prominent in the mountaineering experience: the exhilaration of facing a great challenge; the courage and skill required to navigate a path through peril; and the mountain ascent as a metaphor for the journey of life.

The artist’s work is showcased in galleries, as well as specialized venues, including mountaineering clubs and events. Janet’s work is exhibited in hotels and chalets in France, Switzerland and Italy especially along the Haute Route, which links Chamonix and Zermatt. Janet is an associate member of the Alpine Club in London as an artist. Her work is include in the included in the book The Artists Of The Alpine Club, A Biographical Dictionary edition 2011 by Keeper of the Pictures, by Peter Mallalieu.
